Conserving the environment can start from our home. With all of the pollution that has reached the deepest ocean, separating the household waste alone is not enough. We have to be smart and wise in limiting the use of nonrecyclable and possibly environmentally-harmful materials.

Use recyclable containers

Usually, plastic containers dominate the storage in the kitchen. Whenever you decide to buy a new food container, you should examine if it is made of plastic resin one or two. You can identify the plastic type of the container from the recycling symbol with a number on it.

Avoid using plastic containers that do not have any recycling symbol on them. Besides hurting the environment, plastic resin number 6 and 7 are bad for your health.

When you want to dump worn-out plastic containers, make sure they go to the recycling depot in your area. Plastic can severely contaminate the environment and needs hundreds of years to decompose.

Consider replacing all of your plastic containers with the glass-made ones. Glass containers are free from chemical leaching and are highly recyclable, unlike the plastic counterparts.

Composting organic waste

Some governments provide an excellent recycling system for their citizens. Separating waste makes recycling much more feasible and thus helps to preserve Earth. But if you happen to live in a neighborhood with poor waste management, you can start by separating the organic waste from the inorganic.

Inorganic waste requires industrial technology to recycle. Plastics must be categorized based on the polyester type, and metal waste has got to be melted into alloy before it can be reused. But organic waste just needs to decompose properly to fuel the growth of the plants. You can turn the waste into fertilizer and then use it to re-green your area.

All you need is a plastic container with a tight sealing. Make sure that the size is big enough to take your organic waste. Then drill several holes on the cover lid. Put dry leaves or paper at the bottom, and fill the one-third of the space with soil. Water the soil just enough until it is damp, and it is all ready to decompose your organic waste.

Every time you have organic waste to dump, mix it with the soil in the composter bin and seal it tightly. It takes approximately 2-3 months to decompose the waste into fertilizer. So, you should calculate how much organic waste you frequently produce, and how many composters you need for that.

Investing in Do-It-Yourself (DIY) recycling tools

If you have a spare room at your house, it would be better to use as the waste-processing room. For metal scrapes, the basic tools you need would be screwdrivers, power drills, wire-stripper, crowbar, wrench, hammer, and rust-cleaners.
